The sesion will provide participants with an overview of the ITN scheme and an ITN Proposal Writing Workshop that will focus mainly on practical issues related to running and being part of an ITN. The workshop will provide a clear understanding of the proposal format and the key issues relating to writing and submitting a competitive proposal. The thesis Defense of Mr Neuschitzer (ESR 2.3) will take place next September 29th at 10:30h at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Barcelona (room: “Sala de Graus Vella”).
The main goal of this thesis was to develop and optimize heterostructure solar cells based on kesterite (Cu2ZnSnSe4) absorbers, a semiconducting compound consisting of earth abundant materials, by cost effective physical vapour deposition (PVD) and chemical based processes. The thesis is structured around several articles published in high impact peer review journals.

Kestcells Fellow ESR.2.1 José Márquez Prieto will defense his PHD thesis entitle: “DEVELOPMENT OF Cu2ZnSnSe4 BASED ABSORBERS BY PVD PROCESSES”, next 7th of july in the University of Northumbria at Newcastle.
This thesis discusses the study of the formation of the pure selenide of the kesterite compound Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) as an absorber layer. The layers were produced by a 2-stage physical vapour deposition (PVD) of Cu-Zn-Sn precursor films by sputtering followed by a reactive conversion step in the presence of Se. Solar cells have been fabricated with the absorbers produced.
The research explored the evolution of phases during the formation of CZTSe and the influence of the absorber composition on its optical and microstructural properties. In addition, the work involved: optimisation of the CZTSe synthesis process, studying the influence of the Se source, the role of temperature of the conversion process, the role of ramping rate and the ambient pressure, and the role of these for maximising device performance.
The synthesis of CZTSe films with very Cu-poor and Zn-rich compositions lead to a high population of the beneficial VCu + ZnCu defect clusters, and CZTSe phase domains with a less disordered kesterite type structure. This led to devices with efficiencies over 8% and VOC values greater than those of the current world record CZTSe solar cells. The research of this thesis provides a combination of practical and fundamental knowledge that could become a key towards minimising the efficiency gap between kesterites and their commercialised chalcogenide predecessors: CdTe and Cu(In,Ga)Se2.

Third EU PV Clusters Workshop: Progress in Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology for Photovoltaics: from Laboratory to the Market. 25th-26th May.
Next 25th and 26th of May will take place in Barcelona the third edition of the EU PV Clusters Workshop with the tittle: “ Progress in Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology for Photovoltaics: from Laboratory to the Market.”
This Workshop brings together more than 40 projects addressing different PV technologies funded by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme and Horizon 2020. It has the objective of highlighting the key results of the projects involved in the workshop, give an updated overview of the projects in the PV field, identify the common R&I priorities and provide a forum of discussion.
KESTCELLS will be represented by Edgardo Saucedo who will emphasize the results achieved in the project during the last months.
The event, is organized by LEITAT, and hosted by MATHERO a European project funded by the NMP Programme under the EU 7th Framework Programme.
The workshop will take place at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Barcelona.

Second defense of a PhD Thesis in the project Kestcells. ESR 5.1 Dario Cozza has defended his PHD thesis “Modeling and physical studies of kesterite solar cells”
This thesis deals with modeling and simulations of kesterite solar cells with the aim of studying their physical mechanisms and improving the design of the devices. Synthetic kesterites are thin film materials made of cheap/earth-abundant elements but a significant VOC deficit still limits the efficiency of these solar cells. Two numerical models for a Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) and a Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) solar cell are proposed. The provided values of the material parameters, for all the layers of the solar cell, are obtained either from comparisons/analysis of data found in literature or, in some cases, from direct measurements. 1D and 2D simulations are performed: the software SCAPS is used to study the impact of the Molybdenum and the MoSe2 layers, present at the back contact of CZTSe solar cells. We investigate also the ideal properties of alternative interfacial layers that could replace the MoSe2 layer to improve the device performances. The transfer matrix method (TMM) and SCAPS are employed together to perform optoelectronic simulations with the aim of optimizing the thickness of the buffer (CdS) and the window (ITO) layers in order to maximize the short circuit current (JSC ) of the device. Finally Silvaco R is used to perform 2D simulations of the CZTSe grain boundaries (GBs) present inside the polycrystalline kesterite absorbers. For the latter work, experimental Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) characterizations are performed in order to find possible correlations between the performance losses and the electrical activity of the GBs. Some of the physical mechanisms implemented at the GBs in our 2D model can reproduce the VOC limitations of the kesterite devices, and at the same time can provide reasonable explanations to the results obtained by the KPFM technique.

First defense of a PhD Thesis in the project Kestcells. ESR 1.3 Mirjana Dimitrievska, will defense her PHD thesis “Crystalline and vibrational properties of Kesterites” next 21-12-15 in the University of Barcelona.
The main objective of the thesis is to provide detailed insights into the fundamental properties of kesterite materials, including pure quaternary CZTS and CZTSe compounds, and as well as their solid solutions, CZTSSe. The thesis is mainly focused on studying the structural and vibrational properties of kesterites principally using regular and resonant Raman spectroscopy techniques in correlation with other characterization methods.

The industrial secondments foreseen in the world leading solar company ABENGOA have been completed. The company is conducting in the project KESTCELLS a techno-economic analysis of kesterite technology; as well as an analysis of the critical points of the manufacturing process and the semiconductor. Thus, data generated in the project at the chemical composition level, crystalline phases, optical and electrical proprieties, etc. is being analyzed. The aim is to identify the weaknesses of the technology to optimize it and evaluate its monitoring station at the Solucar Complex in Sanlúcar la Mayor (Seville, Spain) where the seconded ESRs had the opportunity of experience first-hand measurements of PV panels.

KESTCELLS ESR Laura Elisa Valle Ríos, that is carrying out the PhD Thesis at the Free University Berlin under the supervision of Prof. Susan Schorr, has been awarded with the CrystEngComm poster prize by the Royal Society of Chemistry, during the the European Crystallographic Meeting, in in Rovinj, Croatia. The award committee highlighted the impressive and high level work developed by Laura Elisa, related to the cationic disorder in Kesterites in the frame of KESTCELLS project.
This is a very nice success for the ESR Laura Elisa, demonstrating the high impact work that is under development in KESTCELLS.

The deadline for abstract submission is the 23rd of September. The authors will be notified of acceptance and the mode of presentation during the week beginning the 12th of October. At that time, the workshop programme and registration will be made available.
Please note that the number of participants will be limited to 80, with a maximum of two co-authors per presentation. This year’s workshop will also include a Pre-meeting workshop organised by, and for, accepted PhD student-authors, following the example set by HZB at the 4th Workshop.

As part of the multidisciplinary training of the Kestcells project, researchers will carry out during this summer an on-line module that will focus in learning how to create, develop and present successfully a business plan. The fellows will be tutored by ESADE’s teachers and IREC’s Project Management Office. They will define with the researchers an imaginary (although feasible) technological product. Researchers will learn the general guidelines of how to look for a science based opportunity, how to identify all the stakeholders involved, how to design and validate a suitable business model for that opportunity, and how to present a project to get funding and any other needed resources.

KESTCELLS Open Day
The project KESTCELLS is organizing a coordinated Open Day that will involve six institutions of the consortium. The Open Day activities will take place in November and December 2014 and are addressed to disseminate the research done in the frame of the project KESTCELLS, to undergraduate and graduate students. The Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science andTechnology (EMPA) will organize for the 14th of November a half day visit to undergraduate teachers. They will be informed about the research done in the photovoltaics area and there will be a visit to the laboratories. The 24th of November the University of Luxembourg (UL) will invite a Schengen school to visit the facilities to introduce the students to the day-to-day of science. The Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) will include the 12th of December a session devoted to the KESTCELLS project in a Renewal Energies Open workshop organized by the University. Ix-Marseille University (AMU) will invite the 20th of November a class of Master students that will receive three seminars on the research done in Photovoltaics in the University. The University of Upplsala (UU) will invite the 10th of December two groups of undergraduate students from a local High School. The Fundació Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya (IREC) will host the 21st and the 27th of November undergraduate students and teachers from local High Schools. The students will receive a general introduction on the Photovoltaics Research and a labtour.
These activities are being developed by the Early Stage Researchers recruited by the project as part of their multidisciplinary training. They have the objective to inform and encourage a new generation of students of the opportunities of becoming a researcher and to promote the Marie Curie Research Programs.

In this seminar the use of photo electron spectroscopy, using x-ray (XPS) and UV (UPS) excitation for the characterization of thin film solar cell components will be explored. Special emphasis will be on the determination of the chemical composition of surfaces and interfaces and on the analysis of band alignments between different layers of thin film devices by UV photo electron spectroscopy.

A Seminar on Effect of Na on CIGSe thin fims and devices. Flexible solar cells. Possible extrapolation to Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4? will be offered by the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid next 28th of February.
The seminar will consist on an overview of the effect of Na on Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGSe) thin films on different substrates will be presented. Moreover, a brief introduction of Na influence on Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 materials on different substrates will be done based in the available literature

KESTCELLS will participate in the second EU PV Clusters Workshop and General Assembly that will take place in Barcelona (Spain) in November 2013. The event is organized with the support of the SCALENANO European project (www.scalenano.eu), XaRmae (Catalan Network of Excellence on Materials for Energy) and the University of Barcelona. This Workshop builds on the success of the first Workshop on “Photovoltaics and nanotechnology: from innovation to industry”, a timely and very successful event organized by CEA (France), which launched the “EU PV Clusters” of projects (www.eupvclusters.eu ) at the end of 2010.
This Workshop is intended to contribute to a European strategy on nanotechnology for PV innovation, aligned to and complementing the global European energy strategy for 2020, to help bringing promising results to the market, in line with the objectives of Horizon 2020, the next EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation due to start in 2014.
The workshop will take place on 26th-28th November 2013 in Barcelona (Spain), at the Lecture Hall (Aula Magna) of the University of Barcelona.

A seminar on “Optoelectrical characterization of thin films photovoltaics absorbers and devices” will be offered by the IREC next 25th of November.
In this Seminar, electrical properties of semiconductors and main techniques for the electrical characterization of materials will be reviewed by Dr. C.M. Ruiz-Herrero. After, Dr. V. Bermudez will present the most important techniques for the optoelectronic characterization of solar cells, including some practical cases.

A seminar on “Characterisation of novel Solar Cells” will be offered by the University of Northumbria next 21st of November. Speaker will be Dr. N.S.Beattie.
An introduction to some common measurements techniques used for solar cells. In particular, data from quantum dot solar cells will be presented to illustrate characterisation techniques such as PL, AFM and external quantum efficiency. Following the seminar, a practical demonstration with the AFM will be provided.

A seminar on “Safety Assessment and Comparing Safety Records and Public Recognition of Various Energy Supplies” will be offered by the Free Univerity of Berlin next 25-11-13 The speaker will be Dr. Holger Tietze-Jaentsch, Head of Product Quality Control Office for Radioactive Waste at the Forschungszentrum Jülich, Institute of Energy and Climate Research, Nuclear Safety Research and Waste Management (IEK-6).

A Seminar on Phase Diagrams will be offered the next 5th of November at EMPA. An introduction to the basics of phase diagrams and their applications for chalcogenide materials relevant to solar cells. The theoretical part will be preceded with a practical session on metallographic analysis.

A series of lectures will be offered the 15th,17th and 22nd of October by the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Uppsala on the topic “Thermodynamics of phase diagrams”.

First Workshop organized in the frame of project Kestcells.
As part of the training program of the Early Stage Researchers five thematic workshops will be organized. The First one will take place in the University of Luxembourg next 19th of September and will be focused in Advanced Characterisation Techniques for Thin Film Technologies. The workshop is open to researcher outside the network prior registration.

As a part of the training program of the new recruited early stage researchers, a series of Seminars are being organized for the different partners of Kestcells project. The Seminars addressed the different topics of thin films technology including fundamental properties of semiconductors, main aspects of material science, layers growth and characterization, solar cells fabrication and its optoelectronic characterization, etc. Schedule of the seminars are coordinated at the level of the Network, to facilitate participation of researchers from other centres interested in the seminar topics

The six month meeting of the Kestcells project will be hosted by Uppsala University – Angstrom Solar Centre in Uppsala, Sweden from March 14th-15th 2013. In this meeting the first ESR’s contracted under the frame of Kestcells will participate, presenting their thesis project. Also, the results obtained in WP01 and WP02 during the first six months of the project will be presented, and the scientific work for the next six months will be discussed by the two on-going workpackages as well as for WP03, WP04 and WP05.

The Kick-off meeting of the Kestcells project took place at the IREC laboratories in Barcelona last October 10th 2012. The Nine academic partners as well as the two industrial ones took part in the meeting, where were discussed the objectives, implementation, work-plan and training program of the project. A review of the management issues specially focused in the well practices for recruitment was done, as the recruitment of the first ESR’s is one the crucial activities during the next six months. Other important points like the selection of the logo and the structure of the project web site were discussed. The next consortium meeting will take place at the University of Uppsala in six month time.

Kestcells Project starts the recruitment process with the publication of the first 8 ESR’s positions at: Institut de Recerca de l’Energia de Catalunya IREC (2 positions), Université du Luxembourg (1 position), Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie HZB (1 position), University of Northumbria at Newcastle (1 position), Université d’Aix Marseille (1 position), Freie Universitaet Berlin (1 position), Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (1 position) and Uppsala Universitet (1 position). The recruitment process will be open, transparent, impartial and equitable following the guidelines of the European Charter of Researchers, and the incorporation of the new 9 ESR’s will be during the first 5 months of next year.

The University of Luxembourg, one of the partners of Kestcells Project, will organize the 3rd European Kesterite Workshop the next 22nd and 23rd November 2012. It will be a forum for themost relevant experts from Europe in kesterite solar cells. This workshop continues the work done in the previous workshops in Uppsala and Barcelona. The topics discussed will cover all relevant aspects of the material and the solar cells: growth of kesterite films and crystals, electronic and structural properties of kesterite materials, device structure and characterization. Several partners of Kestcells will take part in the organization and scientific committee of the workshop as well as in the presentation of the last results on these materials. Additional information.
